Since the opening of the first lines M1/M2 in 2002, The Copenhagen Metro has become an essential artery in the public transportation system in Copenhagen serving more than 64 million passengers annually with commendable customer satisfaction and punctuality levels. However, passenger demand on M1 and M2 is expected to increase so the capacity limit of the system will be reached on some stations at the busiest hours. In addition, The Copenhagen Metro on Line M1 and M2 has a signalling system which is approaching the end of its expected technical life. The Copenhagen Metro is analysing scenarios on when and how to replace the signalling system, also considering a number of projects and tenders that either will influence or be influenced by the re-signalling project.

In connection to the re-signalling of lines M1/M2 in 2002, which will lead to one of the first GoA4-to-GoA4 transformations in the world, The Copenhagen Metro has tasked Ramboll team to analyse when and how to replace the signalling system. Pietro Zingarelli (Ramboll) will present the process used and the results of the analysis conducted. The analysis addresses the condition of the current signalling system, the technical options for a new signalling system, when and how to procure it, the scope of the re-signalling, the options for migrating to a new signalling system and how The Copenhagen Metro should set an organisation supporting the re-signalling project.

ATO itself is not new as it is in use since decades within metro systems (Urban) while for main- and suburban lines only a handful of lines are equipped with ATO. In the recent years development of ATO for main- and suburbanlines has picked up the pace as it is seen as a gamechanger (in combination with ETCS) in terms of capacity increase and reduced energy consumption without adding additional infrastructure. Duting this presentation Sebastiaan van der Zee from Alstom provides an update on the development and the projects varying from GoA2 to GoA4 on both ETCS and non-ETCS lines.

The implementation of professional, state-of-the-art approaches to asset management is essential to optimise assets across the whole life-cycle. Our experience shows that asset managers often have significant room for improvement in transforming from a technically driven, experienced-based and reactive to a more digital, data-driven and forward-looking organisation. We explain opportunities from projects delivered and look into the cultural challenges which are inseparably linked to transformation processes.

Railway managers worldwide are committed to the expansion of rail to improve mobility and to fight climate change. Particularly in times of a pandemic and geopolitical crisis, increasing demands on rail transport achieving financial better cost effectiveness for new build lines is increasingly put to the test. The question is raised as to whether the type of designing, planning, and executing high-speed rail projects is really the appropriate means to meet the challenges of the present.
Based on many years of consultancy experience, civity has developed a holistic cost model for new build rail line. At the core of this model are costs and cost breakdowns from real investment projects of the past.
The presentation will provide an overview of the most important cost drivers. It will help to identify best practices in cost effectiveness - the primary objective being the extraction of transferable good practices for railway infrastructure managers and railway organisations.
Reshaping line concept and project design
Following a major cost overruns Norwegian infrastructure manager Bane NOR has initiated a comprehensive analysis of their current line concepts and project design for new build lines. Based on this analysis, Bane NOR has decided to start discussion with their stakeholders to reshape line concept and project design achieve financial sustainability and innovate for quality. The presentation will focus on learnings applicable for other railway organisations.
